A Closer Look: Pruning our Chardonnay Vines

At Can Gelat, each variety in our vineyard is cared for with precision and respect for its unique character. In our Chardonnay parcel, we use the Guyot pruning method, a classic approach for balanced white wine production.

Led by our vineyard manager Elia, the team carefully selects one strong cane to carry this year’s fruit, alongside a small spur that will ensure next year’s growth. Throughout the vines, we remove any shoots that grow downward or inward—these are more fragile and could crowd the plant or break under their own weight.

But pruning is never just technical. Every vine is different, and working ecologically means reading the plant, observing its needs, and adapting with care and intuition.

Because at Can Gelat, it all starts here: with the decisions we make in the vineyard, and the focus on quality over quantity.
